This year I am trying something I have never done before: choosing a word for the year. I have seen people blog about this and noted Facebook quizzes for the last few years but never gave it much thought. I’m not sure what sent me on a chase this year to figure out how it’s done, but I decided to give it a shot. After Googling “how to choose a word” and “words for the year” and similar things, I came across the website www.myoneword.org. The process was simple and straightforward. First, determine the kind of person you want to become. For me, I know I want to be healthy-emotionally, physically, spiritually. I want to make consistent daily choices that lend to health in body and soul. I made my list of words and phrases that speak health to me.
Second, I thought of what characteristics “healthy” people display. Words like intentional, authentic, planned, thoughtful all came to mind as I reflected on friends with healthy emotional and spiritual lives. And when I thought of friends who are physically healthy I came up with words like disciplined, focused, consistent.
Then I moved on to step 3: I chose a word. But it was really more like the word chose me. I glanced at all the notes I had written down and the word that stood out to me was FOCUS. I tend to lose focus when circumstances don’t march along to my plans. I get frustrated and angry and want to quit moving forward. But I realized I can’t give obstacles and challenges power over my forward progress. I have to keep moving towards my goals and accept interruptions as part of God’s growth plan for me along the way. By choosing the word FOCUS it doesn’t mean I singularly focus on my own goals, but rather I focus on the big picture: trusting God that the journey He has me on is the one that will produce the health I desire in my body, mind and spirit.
January is a great time to reflect and refocus as we start a new calendar year. In SEND it is also time to fill out our Individual Growth Plans (IGP). I have found this process to be really helpful in creating goals and then learning activities that contribute to growth in my spiritual, personal, and professional development.
Join me for a working session on Thursday, January 19th at 8:30 a.m. EST as we talk through goals for the new year. (If this time doesn’t work for you, please sign up and indicate a time that will.) As a group we can brainstorm creative learning activities and talk through realistic goals for 2017.
