Book Review: Spiritual Disciplines Handbook

Spiritual Disciplines Handbook

Are you looking for a resource that will help you make space for God in the busyness of your life?  Then this book is for you!  Are you looking for a resource that will help you in your spiritual formation journey to be more like Jesus?  Then this book is for you!  Do you want some new (but ancient) and creative ways to engage with the Holy Spirit? Then this book is for you!  I cannot say enough good things about the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook.   Written by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun out of her experience leading others in spiritual formation, it is one of the most comprehensive and easily accessible books for spiritual disciplines on the market.  The book is laid out with the acrostic

Worship

Open Myself to God

Relinquish the False Self

Share my life with Others

Hear God’s Word

Incarnate the Love of Christ

Pray

Each section lays out several possible disciplines you could engage in to grow in that area.  Don’t know where to start?  No problem!  Calhoun offers excellent explanations of each section in the introduction as well as provides a spiritual growth planner and assessment tool in the appendix.  In addition, she provides information on seasons of spiritual growth and there is a chart that helps you understand where you are in your journey.  Further, she provides instruction on how to use this book alone or with a small group.

One of the things I appreciate most about this book is that is NOT meant to be read  cover to cover.  She encourages you to choose one discipline and practice it for at least a week.  The emphasis is not on checking off the boxes, but finding the discipline that speaks most to your Soul at any given moment.  This is a great tool for anyone longing for deeper intimacy with Christ.  I cannot recommend it highly enough!  It’s even available on Kindle-so what are you waiting for?
